My mom had planned a wonderful Christmas dinner on the night of Luke's Birthday. It was perfect because that would mean that my grandparents would be there along with my sister, her husband, and their kids.
The table was set so beautifully. My mom is always very classy for meals like these. The food was delish, as always, and the company was great. After dinner my sibs, mom and dad, and the grandparents sat around the table telling stories of all the things they did as a child that their parents never knew about. Or something that made mom and dad so mad.
There was a whole lot of laughing going on. My dad's face is always classic when we got in trouble. I don't know if it's old age or he doesn't feel as responsible for us anymore but my dad has turned in to quite a softy compared to when we were young kids. I use to be terrified of my old man.
I was such a little sassy pants. Good thing I turned out ok.
So after the adults (feels so weird to put myself in that category now) had their laughs it was time for the birthday cake extravaganza! My mom and I did a interesting cake. I thought it would be easy if we just cut our the cake to form a sun. I know, totally dorky, but I wanted a little cake for Luke to eat from.
So we made a sun and Luke got to have the whole center.
When we got the candle and put it in front of him we started singing the "happy birthday" song. Everyone was smiling and all the other kids were gathered around because they wanted to be the one's to blow out the candle. Suddenly, with a blink of an eye, Lukie grabbed the candle and the flame. Everyone jumped up and yelled! Lukie was fine and it didn't even do a thing but he was sure quick to grab the candle. Note to self, never put the cake in front until he is ready to blow out the candle. Nolan was not as curious as Luke
I got Luke out of the high chair to wash his hand to make sure nothing did happen to it. I put him back in to see if he wanted any cake. I thought for sure he would dive right in to the goods. But he just stared at it for awhile and then just played with the frosting.
What is it with my kids and not getting all messy to eat their cake? I'm sure the main reason for Luke not eating his cake was he hadn't been feeling all that well. He was pretty much sick the whole time we were in Utah and the previous two months before that. This kids is always sick. It's a good thing he can take it and still be happy.
I always think about how happy he really could be if he were healthy because he is already quite the happy child. Maybe someday we will get a taste.
Happy Birthday little Lukie! You make us so happy and the family is more complete with you in it. I'm sad that your daddy was still in Wisconsin. But we got a lot of good pictures for him to see how it went.
We did it! The year of walking!
